Industrial hygiene is the study of the work environment to identify hazards in the workplace, to provide corrective action in order to prevent occupational injury an illness.

Industrial hygiene also deals with the evaluation of the non-industrial environment, such as residences, office buildings, public buildings and other for chemical, biological,  and other factors that can cause illness and injury.
